Robert John Trace, Jr, MD, age 80, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on February 10, 2026.

He was born on May 9,1945 to Margaret and Robert J. Trace of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.

Bob is survived by his wife, Ellen, his sons, Robert Trace of Mountain View, CA, Jonathan Trace of Fujisawa, Japan, Jonathan's wife Hatsumi, and his two grandchildren, Mana and Luka Trace, to whom he was a beloved and devoted playmate, bedtime story narrator, secret chocolate giver, and, most of all, "papa". He is survived by his sisters, Margaret Miller of Camp Hill, PA and Susan Newton of Cary, NC.

Dr. Trace practiced gastroenterology and internal medicine in Hagerstown, MD for 35 years. He graduated from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine and received his training in internal medicine and gastroenterology there. Bob was a dedicated physician who cared deeply about his patients and their well-being. He spent many long hours researching and reading. He was a member of the Medical Staff of Washington County Hospital and a member of the Society for Internal Medicine and the ASGE.

Bob served as a medical officer in the Navy as a Lt. Commander from 1973-1975 and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed US Naval Academy Football Games and he loved to say "Go Navy, beat Army".

As someone always curious about the world, Bob instilled a love of science, learning, history, and nature in those around him, especially his family. He will be greatly missed.
