Obituary

Robert J. McCurdy, 91, of Camp Hill, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Celebration Villa of York, York, PA

Born on March 15, 1932, in Hancock, Michigan, he was the son of the late James and Delia (Rouleau) McCurdy.

In 1935 he moved from Hancock to Canada, where he resided for a short period of time. He left Canada in 1949 to move back to Hancock to attend school at Soumi College, now Finlandia University. He served in the US Airforce during the Korean War and graduated from Michigan State University in 1957. He worked as a reporter and editor on newspapers in Michigan and Pennsylvania. He co-founded the Catholic Witness, where he was sole editor for 4 years and managing editor for 24 years. He volunteered to read for the blind and mentored school children and adults. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Holy Spirit Hospital, the West Shore Library, now called the Fredrickson Library, and various other entities. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Camp Hill, where he volunteered his time directing publications for the church.

He married Martha Jean Fry on New Years Eve 1960. Martha passed away in October of 2018. Besides their daughter, Anne Elizabeth (McCurdy) Markel, and her husband Brian, of Emigsville, PA, they have five foster children, three grandchildren, Ekaterina Warp and Alexander Pizarro, both of Virginia, and Brittany Markel, of Emigsville, PA, several nieces and nephews, and his extended family, Kenneth Brubaker, of Mechanicsburg, PA,

A viewing will be held from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. on Wednesday October 25, 2023, in the Myers-Baker Funeral Home, 1903 Market St., Camp Hill, PA. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 26th in the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3435 Trindle Rd., Camp Hill, PA with Rev. Neil S. Sullivan as Celebrant. Interment will be held immediately following the mass in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Mechanicsburg, PA.
