Obituary

Lionel R. MacDonald, 93, formerly of South Windsor, CT, passed away, with his family by his side on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA.

Born October 27, 1930, in Northampton, MA, he was the son of the late Rolland and Yvonne (Lupien) MacDonald.

Lionel was a graduate of Saint Michael's High School, Northampton, MA. He went on to join the US Airforce where he served as a Staff Seargent during the Korean War. Lionel was a retired Detail Draftsman with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where he worked for almost 40 years. After his retirement, he worked part time for Southern Auto Auction in East Windsor, CT for many years. Lionel had a true love of fly fishing. He enjoyed tying his own flies and teaching others the joy of fly fishing. He founded as well as served as president for several fly-fishing organizations. He was a member of the South Windsor Super 60's sportsman group and was very active in all aspects of his community. For many years he organized and ran the town fishing derby. He was known as the "Blue Bird Man of South Windsor" for teaching his friends and community members how to build bluebird boxes to attract blue birds to their yards. Lionel was also very active in his St. Catherine parish community and was lector at the 7am Sunday Mass for many years.

Lionel is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (Ferry) MacDonald, of Harrisburg, PA, a daughter, Ellen Mullady and her husband Michael, of Harrisburg, PA, a brother, Jean MacDonald and his wife Sandy, of The Villages, FL, two grandchildren, Emily Southall and her husband Kyle, of Hoover, Alabama, and Lindsay Mullady, of Seoul, South Korea, and one great granddaughter, Brinley Southall.

In addition to his parents, Lionel was preceded in death by a son, James MacDonald, two brothers, Philip MacDonald and Brother Raymond MacDonald, and a granddaughter, Megan MacDonald.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at 10:00 AM in the St. Catherine Church, 6 Windsorville Rd, Broad Brook, CT with Rev. Ronald P.  Zepecki officiating. Interment will be held following the mass in St. Catherine Cemetery. Services times will be posted when finalized. Myers-Baker Funeral & Cremation Services, Camp Hill, PA, has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
