John "Jack" H. Kimpel, 93, of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away on Wednesday September 6, 2017 at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg. Born on May 15, 1924, in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of the late William and Florence (Davies) Kimpel and the widower of Frances (Benner) Kimpel, his wife of 66 years. Jack was a graduate of Chagrin Falls High School in Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII at the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart. Jack went to Colby College in Waterville, ME, where he earned a bachelor's degree and met his beloved wife. Jack was known for his humor, wit, and for his love of the poetry of Ogden Nash and James Whitcomb Riley. He could recite, with style and grace, hundreds of their poems. Jack loved golf, skiing, crosswords, trips to New England beaches, and, most of all, regaling friends and family with antics and stories. Jack, a self-proclaimed "bureaucrat," worked for the Social Security Administration for 30 years, serving for 15 years as district manager in Lafayette, Indiana. He was national president of the SSA Management Association in 1975-6. Jack was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Harrisburg and in Lafayette, where he was a past president. He was a member of the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church. Jack is survived by three sons, John W. Kimpel, of Olathe, KS; Charles "Chuck" H. Kimpel, of Durham, NC; and Tom G. Kimpel and his wife Lee, of Tacoma, WA; one daughter, Maggie F. Bokelman, of Mechanicsburg; a sister-in-law, Georgia Kimpel, of North Canton, OH; nine grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his brother, George Kimpel. Funeral Services will be private and handled at the convenience of the family.
