John C. Wimer III, 69, of Harrisburg, and formerly of Littlestown, PA, peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 26th, 2016, at his home with his loving wife, Cindy (Haushalter) Wimer, by his side. John will be fondly remembered for his positive outlook on life and strong work ethic. He generously dedicated his life to his family, career and community.
Born on May 16, 1947, in New Castle, PA, he was the son of Shirley (Loy) Wimer and the late Jack Wimer of New Castle, PA. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Cline.
John was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Neshannock High School, New Castle, PA. He went on to graduate from Slippery Rock University with a B.S. in Education. While at Slippery Rock, John was on the football and wrestling teams, and a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He served in the Marines as a corporal of the Officers' Candidate Program. After two years as an elementary school teacher in Butler County, John began his career in sales with his father at Ecco Air, a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning company. John's passion for sales led him to Umbaugh Pole Buildings, Honeywell International, Inc. and to G.R. Sponaugle & Sons where he retired as General Manager of sales after 22 years. He then went on to be the Chief Operating Officer of the National Institute for Energy Management and Building Technologies, Sales Manager for Intercon Systems, Inc., and then he began his own sales consultant business.
He and his wife were longtime, active members of the Barts Centenary United Methodist Church in Littlestown, PA. He was a member of the church's Administrative Board and served as a Sunday School teacher and youth group leader. John served on the school board of the Littlestown Area School District and helped to develop the Littlestown Area Senior-Youth Activity Center. He was a 32nd degree Mason belonging to many Masonic bodies. In addition, he was a life time blood donor. John was an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning (ASHRAE) and the Capital Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC). He was also closely involved with the development of the African-American Chamber of Commerce.
John was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and uncle who loved being with his family at the beach or at his cabin in Perry County. He was an avid outdoor and nature enthusiast and enjoyed spending time running, fishing, and canoeing. John enjoyed volunteering his time to help preserve and beautify the Harrisburg Green Belt. He recently was often seen riding his scooter with his dog along the Susquehanna River cleaning up the riverfront area and making new friends.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy, of 46 years; a son, Jay C. Wimer IV, and grandson, Jack C. Wimer V of Dillsburg; a daughter, Amy Crouse, her husband Ryan, and two grandsons, Max and Sam, of Dover. John is also survived by his brother, Donald Wimer, of Conowingo, MD, his wife, Michele, and nieces, Alexis Frazier and Kendall Wimer. He loved and cared for his niece, Megan Cline and great-niece, Isabella Cline, of Harrisburg, as his own children. John also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Barbara Becker, of Kitty Hawk, NC, and nieces, Jessica Becker and Jacqueline Bialostozky; and his nephews, Steven, Kevin, and Aaron Cline and their families. He will be greatly missed by his many loving friends and colleagues.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 6th at 6:30 PM at St. Stephen's Episcopal Cathedral, with the Very Reverend Churchill G. Pinder, officiating. A fellowship reception will follow the service. Free parking is available off of N. Front St., turning left onto Locust St. and left again onto River St. Attendants will provide assistance at the entrance of the PHFA parking garage.
