John Gross Hatfield, PE, age 83, died on Monday, March 3, 2014 at his home. Born January 10, 1931 in Allentown, he was the son of the late Homer and Florence Hatfield. John is survived by his wife of 7 years, Susan (Crowley) Hatfield, his three children Jane Hatfield (John) Erickson, James (Ann) Hatfield, and John Hatfield, two step-children, Christopher Crowley and Beth Crowley (Joe) Hirsch, four grandchildren, J.P. Erickson, Ellie Erickson, Daniel Hatfield, and Michael Hatfield, one step-grandchild, Steven Cardone, one brother, Richard Hatfield, and two sisters, Jean Hersh and Ruth Letson. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Wenger) Hatfield.
John, commonly known as Jack, was a graduate of Lehigh University, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1951, and a Master's Degree in 1953. Jack served in the Army from 1953 to 1955, where he was stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in MD. Jack spent many years working for AMP Incorporated, where he received multiple patents for his designs.
Jack was involved with his church, Market Square Presbyterian in Harrisburg, enjoyed spending time with his friends at the West Shore Country Club, and loved to travel with his wife.
Funeral services will be held at Market Square Presbyterian Church on Monday, March 10, 2014. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 AM, with the service to follow at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the Hatfield family suggests contributions be made to the following organizations: Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 S. Second St., Harrisburg, PA 17101, or Lehigh University, 27 Memorial Dr W, Bethlehem, PA 18015.
