Ken, age 89, of Mechanicsburg, PA passed away on September 16, 2024. Ken was born in Hanover, PA and was the son of the late George and Esther Bowman. Ken was married to Carole Kohl for 21 years until her passing in 2009. He frequently stated that the happiest days of his life were the years he spent with Carole. Ken and Carole traveled extensively and visited every continent except for Australia. Ken and Carole also volunteered with the Carlisle War College and sponsored foreign generals and their families. He is a US Army Veteran and served most of his time at the 98th General Hospital in Germany. While serving in the military, he became a Master Mason. Ken's first teacher was his father, and Ken and his dad would walk one mile to a one room schoolhouse each day. He graduated from Eichelberger Senior High School. He earned a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Shippensburg University, a M.ED. degree in Administration from Western Maryland University, and an Ed.D. degree of Administration from Lehigh University. He was an algebra teacher and athletic director in the Central Dauphin East school district for five years and worked at the Pennsylvania Department of Education for 25 years. He was honored by the Pennsylvania Senate "for his many years of dedicated and distinguished service to the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development." After retiring from the Department of Education, he worked as an education consultant for several years. Ken was a founder and the first president of Londonderry School, which had an initial enrollment of 15, and 50 years later that enrollment has grown to over 400 students. Ken moved to Perry County in 1974, where he built a log home. He wanted a full basement, so he enrolled in the Dauphin County Vocation School, learned masonry skills, and built a cement block basement. Ken is survived by two children, Suzanne Manganelli and husband Mark, and Eric Bowman and wife Patty. He is also survived by Carole's two children, Heather O'Connel and husband Joe, and Chrisopher O'Connel. Ken has ten very special grandchildren: Sean and Jared Manganelli; Brady, Bridget, Ryan, and Emily Bowman; Katherine and Andrew Gabay; and Morgan and Abby O'Connel. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Ken had a philosophy to attempt to do at least one good deed every day for somebody – friend or stranger.
